John Buford was born to a mother and father he never really knew. At age three Buford was taken from his family when the ship his family was being transported on was attacked by pirates. The ship was unfortunately a Batarian slave ship, the pirates were fortunately settling a feud with the captain. The boarding action saw many casualties for the Batarians since they used the human slaves as meat shields during the offensive. These casualties supposedly included Buford's parents. The Captain of these pirates was an ex-alliance navy officer who deserted after the forged peace of the recent “First Contact War.” His name was Malcome Buford and found John hiding under the corpse of what may have been his mother. Malcome took John from that ship, much to the disappointment of his crew and raised him as his own.

Buford spent much of his live in space among the crew of the Grey Ghost. The crew consisted of alliance deserters and troublesome individuals wanted by many of the political factions. He was brought up with a surprisingly strict code of honor. The crew of the ship considered themselves freedom fighters more than they did pirates, normally targeting ships transporting goods to various corrupt corporations.

John was taught the skills required to survive the rather rough life he was brought into, he slowly become the pride and joy of the crew being accepted fully as family. The crew of the Grey Ghost however began to become too bold for their own good. They undertook a mission which involved blowing up a corporation's mining facility on a colony on the outer frontier. It was a trap laid by council authorities who had been hunting the crew of the Grey Ghost, due to some acts being deemed an act of terrorism and a majority of the crew was slaughtered. John luckily escaped the slaughter seeking refuge on Omega.

On Omega Buford used his skills to survive he worked as hired muscle, assassin, saboteur, and negotiator for various gangs. His goal was to save as much money as he could to buy his own ship and set out for the freedom of space once again. However the galaxy seemed to have a different plane for Buford. The word of a special force being put together with high risk but also high pay caught his ear, and Buford tried his best to join such a crew.
