Laila Gulbrandsen was born in a primarily Norwegian region of a newer colony planet. She was raised in a small town consisting of around 100,000 people. At the age of seven, she tended to always gravitate towards the bigger words she could recall in her head. She would always buy into the dictionaries and constantly try to talk to her teachers. She was a constant talker, as much as she could. By the age of ten, she was reading at a collegiate level. She was reading up to about 70 books a year, all chapter books. It was an absolute obsession with reading.
Later on, however, her life took a horrific turn. Her family was disbanded after a massive abuse scare and series of court cases involved with her family and her. Laila was subjected to physical abuse from her father and verbal abuse from her mother, and it all directly led up to her mother’s suicide from overdose of painkillers, and her father followed shortly after, after a crippling bout of depression. Her brother and sisters were sent off to various godparents, but Laila ended up in the hands of a family called the Gulbrandsens, who adopted her after hearing of her horrible story.
After she reached the age of 18, she distanced herself from the adoptive parents and went into hard labor at the nearby construction sites where she performed a lot of contracting operations. She developed a serious pain tolerance here, and simplified her language to what her colleagues spoke at the sites. She later ended up wandering around the military recruitment areas, after getting laid off at the age of 20 from her contracting job. She was recruited, and ended up in a “Combat Medic”’s position, which kept her occupied working as someone who would always ferry people back to areas where they could be actually treated by doctors. Her main job is to ferry wounded, and otherwise, she acts as a standard infantry unit. If a doctor needs assistance, she was trained to assist in these processes as needed.
