Earthborn and raised in the sprawling metropolis of Miami, Everett Ridge found himself in a gang of fifteen small children marauding the streets at night for scraps of food, sharp objects, and thrown-away electronics to sell. He was abandoned by his mother and orphaned when his father met his unfortunate fate in a bullet train accident. For the larger half of his young life, Ridge's only family was the fourteen other children. At the age of 16 he was caught by a military police official outside an Alliance compound attempting unsuccessfully to graft stolen biotics into his skin with the help of a bag of painkillers and a makeshift toolkit.

If he had not been caught, the wounds would have surely been fatal. The military police official, a Corporal R. Vickers, took pity on Ridge and decided to take the boy's fate into his own hands. Corporal Vickers legally adopted Everett and taught him his own version of the moral code he'd been taught in training. He schooled the boy in ethics, personal responsibility for the safety of the body politic, and more useful traits such as cooking for himself and the operation and maintenance of a thermal clip-loading pistol. At the age of 18, Ridge enlisted without hesitation, deciding to leave his life on Earth behind once and for all, and to reach toward the stars as his new purpose was found. He knew he wanted a company of his own. A real family.
