John was born in 2158 ten miles south of Arlington, Texas. Raised on a ranch with his father, mother, and two sisters he lead a privileged life due to his father's occupation as a cattle-tycoon. John attended a private school, where he rode off of the lavish amount of money that his father was able to put into his education. Despite being gifted a free-ride through a private school, John's father did not tolerate slacking, and as such, John was often put through the paces of rigorous studying, both by himself and with private tutors. Life went on, and eventually John graduated from High School in 2176, when news of the Skyllian Blitz reached the networks throughout the Alliance. Surging with patriotism, John enlisted in the Alliance Marine Corps and began his stint through boot camp. After John graduated from his communications school, he was assigned to the the SSV Greenslade, an Alliance cruiser, which was deployed to patrol the Terminus Systems due to security concerns.

Two years later, after enlistment, the SSV Greenslade was involved in the Torfan Offensive, where John was deployed to the moon alongside a vast majority of Marines to annihilate the entrenched Batarian positions. Despite heavy casualties, John survived the ordeal, and after a fine amount of time on shore-leave, was redeployed on the SSV Greenslade to continue patrolling the Terminus Systems for pirate activity. Four years after enlistment, in 2180, John was discharged after his contract expired and went back to Earth to attend college, which he eventually completed in 2182, when he graduated with an associates degree in Communications. He worked with his father until 2183, where after three years of retirement from the military, John suffered too long at the effects of culture-shock, and couldn't adequately adjust to civilian life. Given the Eden Prime War in 2183, John reenlisted in the Alliance Marine Corps, where he participated in numerous raids against Geth Outposts that remained in Alliance Space.

In 2186 and the advent of the Reaper War, John, along with the SSV Greenslade, were stationed in the Arcturus System with the Fifth Fleet. After the destruction of Arcturus Station and the retreat of Alliance forces from Earth, John spent most of his time preparing with the rest of the Marines for the inevitable counter-attack on Earth. Months after the initial retreat, John returned to his home planet and engaged Reaper forces in the streets of London, alongside the remnants of Hammer. Once the Crucible had been initiated and the Reaper forces were neutralized, John returned to the Fifth Fleet to assist with the reconstruction of the damaged Alliance infrastructure. In the coming months, John learned of the recruitment drive for the Joint Council Task Force stationed on the SSV London, and soon requested a transfer into the Task Force's command.
